History of the Cottage Garden
This Wednesday the 17th March, Springfields is welcoming the return of Andrew Sankey. His latest talk will cover all aspects of the Cottage Garden from medieval hovel to the present day.
Discover what the peasants cultivated around their small homes, the vegetables, herbs & fruit trees, and how the plants were not only a food source but how they protected the Fenland folk from mythical events.
Andrew’s talk will consist of a repertoire of stories that include the colour of carrots, interesting country names for plants and the lifestyle that the cottage garden created.
Plus the many strange sayings and old wives tales that still exit today.
The event is being held in the Bellamy Conference Room at Fenscape, at 1pm and is free to attend.
In addition Fens Forward wants to encourage parents with young children to attend the event and so is offering a free Nursery Voucher Scheme, working with Lilliputs, a local Registered Nursery, this will allow parents the option to arrange childcare.
The event is the penultimate one of a six month long Horti’Cultural’ Festival, which has been funded by the department of Business Innovation and Skills through their Learning Revolution -Transformation Fund, which enabled Fens Forward at Fenscape – The Fens Discovery Centre and Springfields Horticultural Society, to put together eighteen themed events including demonstrations, talks and hands on activities.
