SPALDING’ FAMOUS FLOWER PARADE
SATURDAY 1ST MAY 2010
Over 800 participants are already preparing for the 52nd Spalding Flower Parade (themed "Screen Heroes"), which will take place on Saturday 1st May, but parade manager David Norton and his team are anxiously waiting for the tulips to “put a spurts on” after the extra cold winter to ensure that they are ready in time for the big day. David said “we hand-pick around 300,000 tulip heads from tulip growers’ fields in Lincolnshire and Norfolk, and in the last few years we have generally been able to do this at least a week before the parade and just keep them in cold store until we needed them. But, because of this year’s especially cold and extended winter the tulips seem very reluctant to really get growing.
Spalding’s famous flower parade includes specially constructed traditional flower floats designed to represent the “Screen Heroes” theme as well as marching bands, specialty acts and live musical performances. The Parade will leave the Springfields Arena site, just off the A16 Spalding by-pass at 2.00pm for its three mile journey around Spalding town centre. Coach and car parking is available near to the town centre and all around Springfields but access routes are closed at 1.00pm. The Parade finishes at the Festival Finale site in Spalding where the floats will remain on display and will be illuminated on the Saturday and Sunday evening.
